Year in Review
In 2025, the Iowa Pork Industry Center campus and field specialists support the swine industry through hosting numerous events, producing educational content, and interacting with producers across the state.
The center hosted 30 conferences and workshops, resulting in over 14,000 direct contacts with individuals across the swine industry. This included the annual Iowa Swine Day, a one-day conference focused on critical issues facing U.S. pork producers. With over 500 attendees annually, Iowa Swine Day connects producers to researchers and industry experts for timely, updated information on a variety of topics.
The center also hosted international visitors from seven different countries including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, and Mexico. Visitors had the opportunity to go on tours to learn about swine production in Iowa and interact with researchers across Iowa State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and College of Veterinary Medicine.
Truck Rollover Trainings
Each day, there are over 1 million pigs in active transport across the United States. When truck rollovers with livestock occur, emergency responders need to know how to respond.
In the fall of 2025, trainings were conducted on a county-by-county basis with rural emergency management teams to give responders experience with livestock handling and rollovers.
More than 150 individuals participated in the training, interacting with transport vehicle drivers, towing companies, and swine field specialists to learn how to manage an active rollover situation.
Strengthening Industry Connections
Swine field specialists serve as resources for producers and allied industry. With over 14,000 direct contacts in 2025, swine field specialists are providing meaningful conversations, trainings, and support to the Iowa pork industry.
Field specialists help operations meet compliance standards through providing pork quality assurance and truck quality assurance training. In addition, the swine team assists with manure applicator trainings across the state for private and commercial applicators.
The annual Iowa Pork Regional Conferences bring producers together to discuss current issues and connect with experts from Iowa State University and allied industry. Regional meetings were held in four locations across the state and engaged over 100 participants on topics such as swine health, facility management, foreign disease preparedness, and more.
