- Anthrax
is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium
Bacillus anthracis. Anthrax most commonly occurs in wild and
domestic lower vertebrates (cattle, sheep, goats, camels, antelopes,
and other herbivores), but it can also occur in humans when
they are exposed to infected animals or tissue from infected
animals. Check out these links to help you put this disease
in perspective by learning about its causes, symptoms, treatments
and preventative measures.

erysipelas also is known as diamond skin disease because
of the skin markings it produces. The disease is soilborne and
seems to occur more often in hot, dry conditions. ISU Extension
veterinarian Nolan Hartwig says the disease is contagious among
hogs, but very seldom to other species. Contact Hartwig at nhartwig@iastate.edu
or visit with your local veterinarian.
