- USDA Hogs and Pigs Report--2004:
- Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook, provided by USDA, July 22, 2003. This report (pdf format) says red meat production is expected to decline nearly 2 percent in 2003 and 2004 due to shrinking hog, cattle and sheep inventories. 7/28/03
- Economic and Structural Relationships in U.S. Hog Production, provided by USDA-ERS. Rapid change in the size and ownership structure of U.S. hog production has created new and varied challenges for the industry. This report (pdf format) describes an industry becoming increasingly concentrated among fewer and larger farms, and becoming more economically efficient.
- The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has released a publication that describes food security initiatives of the agency, including work with Federal agency partners, state governments, industry and consumers. FSIS administrator Garry L.McKee says that since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America, security - including food security --has been the highest national priority. The Food Security Report is available in pdf form on the FSIS Web site.
- Which performed better in 2002--LRM, LGP or options using futures prices? A new report from Gary May, William Edwards and John Lawrence of ISU Extension economics evaluated outcomes of Livestock Risk Protection and Livestock Gross Margin policies and compared the outcomes with strategies that used options on futures prices. - Producers interested in learning about optimal marketing weights should read a short article (pdf) by ISU Extension livestock economist John Lawrence on how to time marketing efforts. Producers can use an Excel spreadsheet calculator designed by Lawrence to help determine how different market weights, prices and timing may affect expected revenue. 06/04/2002
- The Federal Register has published a proposed rule on indemnity as it relates to an event of an episode of Foot and Mouth Disease or other foreign animal disease. The public may comment on this proposed rule and recommend changes to improve the proposal, with a deadline of July 1, 2002. Read the proposed rule (pdf). - Confined Animal Production and Manure Nutrients
A USDA report says most farms (78 percent for nitrogen and 69 percent for phosphorus) have adequate land on which it is physically feasible to apply the manure produced onfarm at agronomic rates. And, most counties with farms that produce "excess" nutrients have adequate crop acres not associated with livestock operations to spread the manure at agronomic rates.
