  • Nov. 16-18. Pork Selection Workshop. Jones County Extension office, Anamosa. People are invited to register for one of five workshops on pork quality factors education. Sessions are 2-4 p.m. the first two days and 7-9 p.m. all three days, with a limit of 25 per session. Must be at least 18 to attend.   • Nov. 11-12. 12th Annual Swine Disease Conference for Swine Practitioners. Scheman Building, Iowa State University. For program information contact Dr. James McKean or call (515) 294-8790.   • Nov. 13. Livestock Mortality Composting Workshop. Primarily for veterinarians and ISUE field staff. Ames. Learn more about livestock composting.
  • Nov. 2-5. Public hearings on DNR proposed CAFO-related rules. Gene Tinker, DNR coordinator for animal feeding operations, says some larger livestock and poultry producers would be affected by part of the rule change. Changes require national pollution discharge elimination system (NPDES) permits for larger confinement feeding operations in Iowa for the first time. All comments, written and oral, must be received no later than Nov. 5. Contact Tinker for more information.

  • Iowa Manure Management Field Days
  • Aug. 26. USDA listening session on national animal identification program, 1 to 3:30 p.m. Scheman Building, rooms 220-230, Iowa State Center. Registration for those who want to speak begins at noon.
  • Aug. 26-28. Iowa Farm & Field Fest. It's the second year for this event near Boone. See Map 2 (links on the center top of the page) to see where ISU Extension (including IPIC) will be. We're lot #232, located between 2nd and 3rd Streets along Main Street.
  • Aug. 23-25. Manure Nutrient Management Short Course. This training is for those who will help prepare livestock and crop producers for future nutrient management planning needs in Iowa. Sponsored by Iowa Manure Management Action Group, in cooperation with ISU Extension, ISU College of Agriculture, Iowa Natural Resouces Conservation Service and Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
  • Aug. 12-22. Iowa State Fair. Des Moines.
  • Aug. 17-18. Pork Quality and Safety Summit. 8/17 10 a.m. to 8/18 noon, Des Moines. Offered by National Pork Board, this summit will have general sessions and three concurrent sessions pre-harvest, post-harvest and pork quality. Registration fee for producers is $100 in advance, $125 at the door. Read a news release on the NPB Web site that includes a link to the registration brochure.
  • Aug. 18. Antimicrobial Resistance and Alternatives Summit. 1 to 5 p.m., Des Moines. Offered by National Pork Board, this summit will follow the pork quality and safety summit listed above and will include updates on Pork Checkoff plans for research, education and communications on antimicrobial use and resistance, as well as results of Checkoff-funded research in this area.   • August 9. Practical Farmers of Iowa Field Day Swine Workshop: Am I Really Making Money? 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wayne and Ruth Fredericks farm, 1700 350th St., Osage. Learn more about your cost of production through record keeping, feed ration information and more. Bring a feed sample for particle size testing.     Directions for those coming from the south or west: From I-35 merge onto US-18/IA-27 at exit 190. Travel east 23.2 miles to Rudd, then turn left (north) onto Glass Ave/County Road T26.   • August 5. 45th annual George A. Young Swine Health and Management Conference. Registration at 8:30 a.m., program 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Marina Inn, South Sioux City, NE. Updates of swine-related production and technology research and developments. Fee at the door is $85 each.

  • Pork Quality Assurance and Food Safety Quality Assurance certification training programs
  • July 30. Swine research field day. Beginning at 11 a.m., Allee Farm near Newell. Sessions include information on herd health issues related to alternative farrowing systems, such as hoop buildings and pasture.
