  • July 22. National Pork Board Deep Bed Farrow to Finish Pilot Project. Ben Rein farm near Preston, MN. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Single season project features several technologies, including gilt development, deep bedded solid waste manure management, free stall farrowing pens and naturally ventilated covered buildings.   • June 10. Country of Origin Labeling: What it Means for Iowa Livestock Producers, satellite program to run from 10 a.m. to noon. ISU agricultural economist John Lawrence, ISU Extension swine veterinarian/IPIC associate director James McKean and Associate Deputy Administrator for livestock and seed program, AMS, USDA William Sessions will present information on the COOL program, including expectations of and implications for Iowa livestock producers, dates for mandatory participation in COOL, and options for meeting COOL-related requirements. Cost is $10 per person. Origination site is 1915 ASB on the ISU campus, check with county ISU Extension offices for local downlink sites and preregistration requirements. Wagon tours at 3:30 and 5:50 p.m. Topics include odor control, finisher building air quality, composting and hoop gestation data, with speakers from ISU departments of animal science, agronomy and agricultural and biosystems engineering. IPIC director John Mabry will speak during the meal. Tours are free, donations will be accepted for the meal. Swine Nutrient Value Meetings, 1 to 5 p.m. Iowa grain and livestock producers are invited to learn about the mutually beneficial value to their operations of using livestock manure in crop production. Speakers include Jerry Hatfield of the National Soil Tilth Lab, Tracy Blackmer of Iowa Soybean Association and Antonio Mallarino and John Sawyer of the ISU agronomy department. March 11 program is at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Washington and March 13 program is at the Conference Center, Siebens Forum at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.   • March 12. Pork Science 101. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids. Career development workshop for 4-H and FFA members, Pork Youth Ambassadors, and affiliated leaders and instructors. Topics include genetic principles, biotechnology and health science in swine. Market Hog Handling and Transport, Air Quality and Odor Research update, 1 to 4 p.m. Latimer Community Center, Main St. Information on transporting market hogs, including biosecurity measures, pork quality effects and loading tips, with Trucker Quality Certification available. Also, Dr. Wendy Powers from ISU will present current information on air quality and odor research. Cost is $5 per person.   • March 4 and 5. Managing Your Unseen Employee: The Ventilation System. These all-day workshops provide classroom instruction and hands-on demonstrations and training in the area of facility ventilation. Cost is $40 per person which includes handouts, lunch and refreshments, and enrollment is limited to 36 people per site. You must preregister at least two days prior to your program date. March 4 workshop is at the ISU Northwest Iowa Research Farm at Calumet and the March 5 workshop is at the Iowa State Bank in Sac City. This program is cosponsored by staff and faculty from four states, including these ISU-IPIC members: Jay Harmon, Kris Kohl, Jerry Weiss and Dave Stender.
