  • Dec. 13, County Youth Swine Shows - A Round Table Discussion. 7:30-9 p.m. Origination site is 1483 Vet Med on the ISU campus.
    Topics: Philosopy and Ethics in Swine Shows, PQA / QA Certification and Swine ID Forms, Conducting Swine Derby Shows, Bio-Security and Health Issues, Marketing and Auctions and Special Swine Projects.
    Presenters: Denise Schwab, ISU Extension 4-H & Youth Development Specialist, Dr. Jim McKean, ISU Extension Swine Veterinarian, Dr. Tom Baas, ISU Extension Swine Specialist, Larry McMullen, ISU Extension Swine Field Specialist, and Al Christian, Swine Judge and ISU Swine Farm Manager.
    Target audience (in order) county fair swine superintendents, county fair officials, ISU Extension county directors and county youth coordinators, 4-H swine project leaders, FFA advisors and 4-H/FFA parents. 4-H/FFA members are welcome to attend, but the program is focused on the mechanics of developing and conducting a successful swine show. Junior leaders and senior members might be interested in attending.
    Cost is $10 per person. Check with local county ISU Extension offices on possible preregistration and prepayment requirements.

"Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: Airing the Environmental Health Issues" offers a slate of experts to address the scientific foundation of the topic, and a panel of rural residents and pork producers to discuss community concerns. In addition, there will be opportunity for audience questions and comments. Attendance (including breakfast and lunch) is free, but you should preregister. Co-sponsored by University of Iowa Public Health Department'sEnvironmental Health Sciences Research Center and National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (one of the National Institutes of Health.)   • Nov. 8-9. Ninth Annual Swine Disease Conference for Swine Practitioners. This events focuses on diagnostic and disease management techniques for the effective control of swine diseases. Held at the Scheman Building at the Iowa State Center, Iowa State University, Ames, IA.   • Oct. 10, Manure Application Field Day, Dan Jorgensen farm, Audubon County. The goal of this field day is to demonstrate residue management and measurement, and to discuss conservation compliance concerns from manure applications. USDA-NRCS, DNR and ISU staff will be available to answer questions about residue management, conservation plans, manure management plans, manure applicator certification program, odor control practices and other issues. Various implement dealers will display equipment. For more information, contact teh Audubon County Soil and Water Conservation District at (712) 563-4248. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Directions: from Audubon, on F32 go east seven miles, then north on N36 four miles. From Dedham: on N36 go south nine miles.

  • Sept. 24 Think Tank on Animal Agriculture, with topic of antimicrobial resistance. Gold Room, Memorial Union. The Think Tank is a forum of faculty and staff who are working to identify areas in animal agriculture that may lead to problems in the future and to seek solutions before problems arise.
  • Sept. 29 Chuckwagon Breakfast, Farm Bureau Livestock Pavilion in Kildee Hall. Coffee is ready at 7:30 a.m.; breakfast is served from 8 to 9:30 a.m. A $1 donation is requested for diners age 13 and above.
  • September 17, 4th Annual Minisymposium on Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Ensminger Room, Kildee Hall, ISU.
  • September 18, Niche Markets Conference: What's in it for You? This one-day program is designed to help producers, processors, distributors, lenders and representatives of existing groups see the whole picture when it comes to value added marketing. It also will allow participants to discuss the challenges and opportunities that producers, processors, and retailers face in providing differentiated pork products to consumers. Cost is $50 per person when registration and fee are received by Sept. 12. Registrations received after that date are $60 each and lunch is not guaranteed.     In 2000, the Iowa Pork Producers Association agreed to combine their annual Pork Chop Open with the Lauren Christian Golf Outing to feature one golf event in the summer and to help raise funds for the Lauren Christian Endowment. Thus, the Lauren Christian Pork Chop Open was born.

  • June 27, Farms, Food and the Future conference, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Conference, food festival and trade show for anyone who wants to learn about the future of adding value to Iowa's commodities. $50 per person until June 16, $70 per person after that date.   • June 21, Dealing with Risks in Today’s Swine Industry seminar, 4 to 6 pm at Western Iowa Tech Auditorium, 200 Victory Drive in Cherokee. This seminar preceeds the AFO/CAFO meeting to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the same location.

  • National Swine Improvement Federation National Ultrasound Training and Certification Conference, May 21-22 
    May 21, 12:30-9 p.m., education conference at Livestock Pavilion, Kildee Hall, ISU campus, Ames, Iowa. 
    May 22, 7 a.m.-6 p.m., certification at Story County Fairgrounds in Nevada, Iowa. Preregistrations due by May 1. Nonrefundable cost is $300 per person for the two-day event. Those not interested in becoming certified scanners may attend the education conference only for $50 per person.   • Foot and Mouth Disease Information for Pork Producers ICN program, April 11, 7-9 p.m. This program will provide information on Foot and Mouth Disease, including a description of the disease and comparison with other diseases, to interested members of Iowa's pork industry. Speakers and topics include Beth Lautner of NPPC--explanation of efforts by US and Iowa officials to keep the disease out and emergency plans for if the disease would be found; John Carr of ISU's Vet Med College--development of FMD in Europe and its current status there; and Dermot Hayes of ISU--potential economic impact if FDM does hit here. ISU Extension veterinarian Nolan Hartwig has been invited to describe FMD and compare it with other diseases currently in the news or similar in nature. The program is free.|News release|

This National Pork Producer Council-sponsored conference is designed to provide unbiased, fact-based information to producers considering building small slaughter facilities.   • "Hog Pricing Insurance: What's in it for Me?", January 15, 2001, 7-8:30 p.m. Quarterly ICN program sponsored by IPIC, ISU Extension, Iowa Pork Producers Association and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. This program will focus on a proposed hog pricing insurance program. ISU ag economist Bruce Babcock will explain what the program is, how it works, available levels of coverage and what the coverage would cost. ISU ag economist John Lawrence will talk about recent USDA Hogs and Pigs Report numbers and how producer income would have affected if coverage had been available.
